Enabling green steel

Steel is essential to modern life, however the steel industry is one of the largest contributors to climate change, responsible for ~9% of global CO2 emissions. BSL’s technology contributes to the production of green steel at scale, by significantly reducing the emissions related to the preparation of iron ore fines, before and during reduction in the iron and steel making processes.
Additionally, BSL’s technology provides significantly reduced process complexity and capital intensity, delivering commercial benefits to existing and future industry participants, across iron ore miners, pellet producers and steel makers.
The challenge
The steel industry is not on track to achieve net zero by 2050 as total emissions are rising, and very little green steel is being produced. Steel’s GHG emissions need to fall by around 25% by 2030 to stay in line with global emissions targets.
Production from blast furnaces is expected to dominate the global market for decades to come but new green steel technologies, principally based upon direct reduction (DRI) plants, are being developed.
Blast Furnaces are highly carbon intensive while DRI plants require high-quality iron ore pellets, which are currently in short supply.
All methods for steel production also produce large volumes of fine waste material with high metals content that are often dumped or used in low value applications.

The solution

BSL is playing an important role in reducing emissions from steel production now and in the future by replacing existing pelletising technologies to:
- Enable rapid reductions of 80% in carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions
- Cut energy usage by up to 80%
- Significantly reduce emissions of NOx and SOx
- Provide a low carbon source of premium pellets to meet growing demand
- Reduce capex by 70%
We can also agglomerate fine waste material into valuable pellets that can be re-used in metals production.
