About
We are a fast-growing technology company that has developed a patented and proprietary process for significantly reducing carbon emissions in iron making, enabling green steel production at scale.
Our cold agglomeration technology reduces process complexity, lowers capital requirements and significantly cuts emissions of CO2, NOx and SOx by replacing traditional technologies (induration and sintering) in iron and steel making.
Our technology can also monetise waste fine materials from metals production by converting them into cold agglomerated pellets that can be added back to the furnace.
Our history
Founded in Middlesbrough, UK, by former British Steel scientists, we have spent more than a decade developing our patented and proprietary process, to convert primary iron ore into high value pellets.
After initial testing, the technology was proven at commercial scale at a major steel plant in the UK.
We have built a dedicated Technology Centre located on Teesside on the Materials Processing Institute’s Campus, a leading European steel centre. The BSL Technology Centre includes a sophisticated pilot plant, where we are working with leading iron ore miners and steel producers to test various iron ore types and refine our patented low-energy, cold binding process.
In 2023 BSL raised US$17.5m to progress the design and construction of an industrial scale plant, to produce commercial volumes of high value iron ore pellets, which will deliver improved environmental, economic and operating performance in iron making processes. We are evaluating options in the UK, Europe and Canada for the location of our first production plant in co-operation with iron ore and steelmaking partners. We are also evaluating high value waste opportunities in the Middle East.
The solution
Our purpose is to assist in the decarbonisation of steel production making green steel a reality at scale.
We will achieve this by providing iron ore miners, pellet producers and steel makers with the technology required to cut emissions from the preparation of iron ore fines, prior to their use in Blast or Direct Reduction Furnaces.
We also enable the conversion of waste fines from furnaces into pellets that can be re-used to produce metals, creating value from previously discarded materials and increasing the circularity of production.
