Binding Solutions Produces World’s First Cold Agglomerated Pellets from Pilbara Ore

London/Teesside: Binding Solutions Limited (“BSL”), the UK based developer of green steel technology, is pleased to announce the successful production of Cold Agglomerated Pellets (“CAPs”) from 100% Pilbara iron ore. This is the first time a CAP has been produced using ore from the world’s largest iron ore producing region, located in Western Australia.

Pilbara ores are complex, and do not survive high temperature furnace conditions when pelletised using traditional agglomeration techniques, such as induration. BSL’s Pilbara CAPs meet recognised furnace test standards and provide a potential route to exploiting value from this prestigious source of iron ore deposits.

The Pilbara CAPs were produced and tested at BSL’s Middlesbrough Technology Centre, utilising state of the art furnace testing equipment and the skills and agglomeration know how of the experienced technical team.

BSL will continue to work with our leading industry partners to further develop this product and identify opportunities where it can be applied for direct reduction iron making as well as blast furnace applications.

BSL’s CAP technology can be applied to multiple ore types to deliver significant, near term reductions in carbon emissions and energy usage of 70% and 80% respectively compared to traditional agglomeration technologies. In addition, due to the modular nature of the BSL technology, CAP plants can reduce capital costs by 86% per million tonnes of annual production. BSL’s technology also almost eliminates NOx and SOx pollution.

Dr Matthew Bennett BSL’s Head of Science said:

“It is globally recognized that goethetic containing ores present challenges that make it difficult to formulate agglomerated pellets that could be used to produce steel.

BSL’s approach has been to understand the behaviour of these ores and to develop a technology that takes advantage of their unique mineralogy.”

ABOUT BINDING SOLUTIONS

Binding Solutions is a fast-growing technology company that has developed a patented process for significantly reducing carbon emissions from steel production. Our cold agglomerated pellets (“CAPs”) enable reductions of up to 80% in energy usage and 70% in CO2 emissions by replacing sinter and induration process that account for approximately 15% of the sector’s emissions. Using our CAP technology can also cut capital requirements by 86% vs indurated pellets and reduce process complexity, delivering commercial benefits to iron ore miners, pellet producers and steel makers.

Following successful blast furnace trials with British Steel in June 2025, BSL announced an MOU with the Salzgitter Group to undertake trials of BSL’s CAPs for blast furnace and direct reduction applications. BSL’s technology can also be deployed to monetise waste fines from metals production by converting them into CAPs that can be added back to the furnace.

BSL’s advanced Technology Centre provides full life cycle testing for clients from lab scale to furnace trial. We are able to work with a wide variety of ores and to simulate conditions in all types of production furnaces.

In May 2025, BSL announced the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding to assess the potential for a state-of-the-art iron ore CAP plant at HES International’s HBTR terminal in Rotterdam, the largest dry bulk terminal in Europe. Wood Mackenzie
